Greetings, esteemed readers! In today's discussion, we will delve into an important decision-making process in dental care: opting for implants or bridge work. The ultimate goal is to discover what treatment plan best suits your specific needs. I am Dr. Dmitry Gorbatov, a seasoned expert in cosmetic and implant dentistry, boasting over 30 years of practice in Hollywood, Florida.
Factors Influencing Dental Treatment Choices
Choosing between implants or bridge work for our patients is a detailed process, hinging on several key considerations. The most significant of these is the location of the missing tooth. If the missing tooth is situated towards the back, we need to assess the fullness of the ridge, the extent of bone loss, and the ridge's shape.
These factors become especially critical when considering implants. A fully-developed ridge allows for an implant to function much like a natural tooth. The crown on the implant will mimic the size and shape of your own teeth, ensuring no food impaction and a seamlessly aesthetic outcome.
However, if there is substantial bone loss or if the ridge is unfavorably shaped (for instance, no buccal bone or a tooth was removed long ago), the crown might have to be significantly larger than the implant. This discrepancy may lead to a bulge and consequent issues, such as food trapping, demanding frequent cleaning after meals. In such scenarios, we recommend bridge work as a better solution, particularly if the adjacent teeth already have restorations like root canals.
A Case Study: Personalized Treatment Plan
Let me illustrate this with a real-life example. A patient came to us with an issue he had faced for a long time. Despite several attempts at getting implants for his two missing front teeth, he remained unsatisfied as the implants failed to adhere. The previous treatment plans suggested reattempting implants, but I disagreed.
Even if the implants were to be successful, the crowns would look noticeably longer than his natural teeth, creating a displeasing aesthetic. Instead, I recommended bridge work with pink ceramic to substitute the bone loss, promising a natural look. The patient agreed, and within just 10 days, we achieved a stunning result that left him extremely satisfied and free from further distress.
