Cosmetic dentists examine these factors before recommending teeth veneers.
We've all seen them. Those glamorous shots of Hollywood faces with perfect smiles. With all of the advertisements about how you can get a grin just like theirs, you may be contemplating getting dental veneers. Much like the ads say, we can dramatically improve the appearance of your teeth with just two visits to our Timonium office.
Veneers are a viable option for many patients looking to give the appearance of straighter teeth, whiter teeth and even wider teeth. However, veneers are not for everyone. Here are three things to consider before making your appointments:
1. Oral health check
Sure, you might be in the best physical shape of your life, but how is your mouth? If you’re currently battling gum disease or tooth decay, dental veneers might not be the best option for you at the moment. Crowns could be the recommended treatment if your decay is deep. You could also benefit from specialized treatments to fight bacteria that causes bleeding and red gums.
However, don’t feel defeated so quickly. Once you’re able to maintain good oral health, veneers may be in order. It’s just important that your current dental health is the best it can be first.
2. Brace for it
Dental veneers can go a long way to improve the appearance of crooked teeth, and even help make gaps disappear. But before you envision that new smile, make sure we aren't first recommending orthodontic treatment.
Braces and other orthodontic treatments may be called for if your bite or jaw position are affected. Only your cosmetic dentist can evaluate these conditions for the best outcome in your specific case.
3. The daily grind
Have you been told you grind your teeth or clench your jaw? Perhaps you do it in your sleep and don’t even notice. It's important to know that it is possible to modify this behavior with conscious effort. Stress can be a contributing factor that you may find manageable.
If you find you are unable to stop grinding and still want veneers or crowns, a professionally made dental guard may be in your future. A guard protects the teeth by keeping front teeth from chipping and rubbing against each other. It protects the back teeth from wearing down at the same time.
When you become a cosmetic dentistry patient, a guard is good insurance in your investment!
