Why Holistic Dental Care Starts with a 3D Scan

At our dental practice, we believe that holistic dental care starts with a 3D scan. This advanced technology provides us with detailed, high-resolution images of your upper and lower jaw, sinuses, teeth, and bone structure. Unlike traditional X-rays, which only offer two-dimensional images, a 3D scan captures both hard and soft tissues with exceptional clarity, allowing us to detect issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The Limitations of Standard X-Rays

When you visit a dentist, they typically take full-mouth X-rays (FMX) or periapical X-rays (PAs) to assess the condition of your teeth and surrounding tissues. However, these X-rays are limited in their ability to detect hidden infections or structural problems within the jawbone. Because they provide only a flat, two-dimensional image, significant issues can be easily missed.

We often see patients who have been to multiple dentists, complaining of discomfort in a specific area. Their X-rays show no signs of trouble, yet they continue to experience symptoms. When we perform a 3D scan, we frequently discover hidden infections or abnormalities that standard X-rays fail to reveal.

Detecting Hidden Infections and Sinus Issues

One common problem we identify through 3D imaging is infections beneath the sinus. A tooth may be dying, yet it appears perfectly healthy on a regular PA X-ray. With a 3D scan, however, we can detect infections as large as 15mm that are contributing to sinus issues and other symptoms.

Similarly, 3D imaging is invaluable for evaluating root canals. Many molars have three or four roots, but standard X-rays often provide an overlapping view, making it impossible to see individual root infections. A 3D scan allows us to view a precise three-dimensional projection, ensuring we catch infections that would otherwise go undiagnosed.

Identifying Cavitations and Post-Extraction Infections

Cavitations—areas of infected bone left behind after tooth extractions—are another issue that cannot be detected with traditional X-rays. These infections commonly develop in locations where wisdom teeth were removed. With a 3D scan, we can pinpoint these problematic areas and address them effectively.

Additionally, 3D imaging is essential for assessing sinus health. If an infection is present inside the sinuses or if a dental infection is spreading into the sinus cavity, a regular PA X-ray will not detect it. A 3D scan, however, provides a comprehensive view, ensuring that no infection goes unnoticed.

The Standard of Care in Our Practice

If you are serious about receiving the best dental care and an accurate diagnosis, a 3D scan is a must. In our practice, we consider it the gold standard of care. Whether you are experiencing unexplained symptoms or simply want a thorough evaluation of your oral health, we highly recommend getting a 3D scan at least once in your lifetime.

The process is quick and painless—taking only 15 minutes—and provides invaluable insights into your dental and overall health. If we identify any issues, we will discuss the best treatment options with you. And if everything looks good, you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing your oral health is in excellent condition.

If you would like to schedule a 3D scan, call our office today. Our team is here to help you achieve optimal dental health with the most advanced diagnostic technology available.
