Hello, my dear friends. Today, we’re going to talk about people who have been diagnosed with a TMJ issue or problems with the muscles of mastication — symptoms like jaw pain, discomfort, headaches, and more.
My name is Dr. Dmitry Gorbatov, and I’ve been practicing cosmetic and holistic dentistry for more than 30 years right here on South Ocean Drive in Hollywood, Florida.
What Does a TMJ Diagnosis Really Mean?
When patients are told they have “TMJ,” that term is often used as a catch-all for various jaw and facial pain conditions. But in reality, 99% of the time, the issue is not the joint itself — it’s the muscles.
If you’re experiencing tightness, pain when chewing, headaches, or soreness in the face or jaw area, the root cause is most likely muscle contraction or muscle fatigue — not the temporomandibular joint.
What Causes Muscle Pain in the Jaw?
Muscle-related facial pain can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:
- Clenching or grinding (bruxism) — especially at night or during stressful moments.
- Uneven bite — due to dental work or misalignment.
- Jaw shifting — from habits or trying to find a “comfortable” position.
- Diet — chewing hard foods like raw carrots can overwork fatigued muscles.
- Poor posture — slouching while working at a computer can strain the neck and jaw muscles.
Many of these issues create a cycle of chronic tension, causing the muscles to remain tight and painful — much like overworked muscles in any other part of your body.
Beware of Quick Fixes
Unfortunately, some doctors may rush into solutions like Invisalign or full-mouth reconstruction to “fix the bite” and eliminate the pain. But if the issue is muscle-related, these approaches can actually make the problem worse.
Invisalign, for example, can shift teeth in a way that destabilizes the bite even more, especially if there’s already muscle pain or joint tension involved.
TMJ Pain May Affect More Than Just the Jaw
The muscles involved in chewing are deeply connected to other parts of the body, especially the spine and upper extremities. That means:
- Numbness or tingling in your hands or fingers
- Cramps in your legs
- Tension in your neck or shoulders
- Headaches or facial pressure
These symptoms may all be related to your bite, posture, or jaw muscle activity.
Our Approach: Whole-Body Evaluation
At Gorbatov Dentistry, we don’t treat the jaw in isolation. We specialize in muscle dysfunction, TMJ, bite rehabilitation, and whole-body dental health. Every patient is different, so our first step is a thorough evaluation to find the true source of your discomfort — whether it’s dental, muscular, postural, or systemic.
