Do You Really Need a Root Canal Before Getting a Crown?
At our holistic dental practice in Hollywood, Florida, we’re often asked:
“If I’m getting a crown, do I also need a root canal?”
The answer is—absolutely not.
I’m Dr. Dmitry Gorbatov, and I’ve been practicing holistic and cosmetic dentistry for 35 years. In our office, root canals are rarely needed—even in full-mouth restorations.
Why Root Canals Aren’t Always Necessary
Before deciding on a root canal, it’s essential to ask:
- Why does the tooth need a crown?
- Is there deep decay?
- Is the tooth fractured?
- Does the patient have any symptoms?
- Is the nerve exposed?
In many cases, we can avoid a root canal altogether by using gentle and conservative techniques. Even if there is pulp exposure, we use biocompatible liners to protect the tooth, then rebuild and place the crown without touching the nerve. This process is called pulp capping, and it has a high success rate—only 4–5% of cases may need a root canal later.
Alternatives to Root Canals Before Crowns
When a tooth is severely damaged, some dentists recommend a root canal just to build a foundation for the crown. We offer a more natural solution: crown lengthening.
By gently removing a bit of gum tissue to expose more of the healthy tooth, we can build a strong, long-lasting restoration—without the need for a root canal or post.
