Hello, my dear friends! Today, we’re going to talk about the best material for front teeth restorations—specifically for cosmetic purposes.

My name is Dr. Dmitry Gorbatov, and I’ve been practicing cosmetic and holistic dentistry for the last 35 years, right here in Hollywood, Florida, on South Ocean Drive.

Choosing the Right Material for Your Front Teeth Restorations

When patients come to us for cosmetic work on their front teeth, one of the most common questions we hear is:

“Doc, what’s the best material to use for my restorations?”

The answer depends on multiple factors, including bite strength, clenching habits, and aesthetic goals. Let’s explore the options.

e.max – The Gold Standard for Cosmetic Restorations

If a patient has a light bite and is planning to get veneers or full crowns on the front teeth, and they do not grind or clench, the best choice is e.max ceramic.

e.max is a high-quality material that has been used in dentistry for many years. It offers:

  • Exceptional translucency for a natural, life-like appearance
  • Reliable strength for long-lasting restorations (15-20 years with proper care)
  • Durability without compromising aesthetics

For Patients with a Heavy Bite or Clenching Habits

Some patients have stronger bite forces or habits like clenching and grinding. In these cases, we need a material that is more resistant to wear and fracture.

What About Zirconia?

Many patients ask:

“Doc, can I get zirconia teeth?”

While zirconia is extremely strong, it was originally designed for back teeth, not for cosmetic purposes. Over time, advancements have made zirconia more translucent, allowing it to be used for front teeth restorations. However, zirconia still does not match e.max in terms of translucency and natural aesthetics. It is often referred to as “white metal.”

Finding the Perfect Balance: Zirconia + e.max

For patients with moderate clenching or grinding, we use a combination approach:

  • A zirconia frame for strength
  • An e.max ceramic layer on top for natural aesthetics

This allows us to create beautiful yet strong restorations that provide both durability and an attractive, natural appearance.

When Full Zirconia is the Only Option

For patients with severe grinding and clenching, or a highly problematic bite, full zirconia restorations are necessary. While they lack the superior translucency of e.max, they offer unmatched strength, making them the best option for extreme cases.

Summary: The Best Material for Your Restorations

  • ✅ e.max is the best for veneers.
  • ✅ e.max crowns are great for people with a light bite.
  • ✅ Zirconia frame + e.max ceramic is ideal for moderate clenching.
  • ✅ Full zirconia is required for extreme grinders and clenchers.
